Andrew Johnson (b. December 29, 1808, Raleigh, North Carolina-d. July 31, 1875, Carter's Station, Tennessee) became the seventeenth president of the United States after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865. Indiana lawyer, judge, and Republican politician. Morton served as the state's lieutenant governor in 1861, and as governor from 1861 to 1867. Governor Oliver P. Morton was Indiana's governor during the Civil War. Throughout the war he mobilized the war effort in Indiana. In order to maintain massive armies during the Civil War a national draft was instituted. Uprisings in Evansville, Indiana protesting the draft were the strongest in the state during that time.
